October Reflections: Justice, Community, and the Power of Our Vote

October is a month of remembrance and action, a time when many threads of justice come together, reminding us that the choices we make today shape the community we live in tomorrow.

It begins with Hispanic Heritage Month, which continues through October 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latine communities whose voices and labor strengthen Pacific County every day. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder of how many families are touched by illness and of the importance of equitable access to care. It is Disability Awareness Month as well, not limited to employment but embracing the full dignity of disabled lives, calling us to ensure access, representation, and the right to participate fully in community.

This month also brings specific days that anchor remembrance in action. On October 11, National Coming Out Day affirms the dignity and visibility of LGBTQ+ neighbors and reminds us that safety and belonging are human rights. On October 13, Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the original caretakers of this land. Here in Pacific County, that means recognizing both the Shoalwater Bay Tribe in the north and the Chinook Indian Nation, whose homelands stretch across Willapa Bay and the mouth of the Columbia River.

On October 17, ballots are mailed in Washington, marking the real beginning of voting season. On October 18, we will host a free community screening of Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution at the Raymond Theatre. This award-winning film tells the story of how a summer camp for teenagers with disabilities helped ignite a nationwide movement that led to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The story is a reminder that grassroots organizing, rooted in dignity and care, has the power to change the world. And finally, on November 4, Election Day closes this cycle- the last opportunity to make sure every ballot is cast and counted.

October is not only about dates on a calendar. It is about remembering, celebrating, and acting together. It is about honoring the past, facing the present with courage, and building the future we deserve. This month, let us reflect, let us gather, and let us vote- because our voices are powerful, and our votes are one way we make them heard.

Reflexiones de octubre: Justicia, comunidad y el poder de nuestro voto

Octubre es un mes de memoria y de acción, un tiempo en que muchos hilos de justicia se entrelazan, recordándonos que las decisiones que tomamos hoy moldean la comunidad en la que viviremos mañana.

Comienza con el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, que continúa hasta el 15 de octubre y celebra las historias, culturas y contribuciones de las comunidades latinas cuyas voces y trabajo fortalecen cada día al condado de Pacific. Octubre también es el Mes de la Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Mama, un recordatorio de cuántas familias se ven afectadas por la enfermedad y de la importancia de un acceso equitativo a la atención médica. Asimismo, es el Mes de la Concientización sobre la Discapacidad, no limitado al empleo, sino que abarca la plena dignidad de las vidas discapacitadas, llamándonos a garantizar el acceso, la representación y el derecho de participar plenamente en la comunidad.

Este mes también trae días específicos que convierten la memoria en acción. El 11 de octubre, el Día Nacional de Salir del Clóset afirma la dignidad y visibilidad de nuestrxs vecinxs LGBTQ+ y nos recuerda que la seguridad y el sentido de pertenencia son derechos humanos. El 13 de octubre, el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas honra a lxs cuidadores originales de esta tierra. Aquí en el condado de Pacific, eso significa reconocer tanto a la Tribu Shoalwater Bay en el norte como a la Nación India Chinook, cuyos territorios ancestrales abarcan la bahía de Willapa y la desembocadura del río Columbia.

El 17 de octubre marca el envío de boletas en Washington, el verdadero inicio de la temporada de votación. El 18 de octubre, nosotrxs seremos anfitrionxs de una proyección comunitaria gratuita de Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution en el Teatro Raymond. Esta película galardonada cuenta la historia de cómo un campamento de verano para adolescentes con discapacidades ayudó a encender un movimiento nacional que condujo a la Ley de Estadounidenses con Discapacidades (ADA). La historia nos recuerda que la organización comunitaria, enraizada en la dignidad y el cuidado, tiene el poder de cambiar el mundo. Y finalmente, el 4 de noviembre llega el Día de las Elecciones, que cierra este ciclo y nos da la última oportunidad de asegurarnos de que cada boleta sea emitida y contada.

Octubre no se trata solo de fechas en un calendario. Se trata de recordar, celebrar y actuar juntxs. Se trata de honrar el pasado, enfrentar el presente con valentía y construir el futuro que merecemos. Este mes, reflexionemos, reunámonos y votemos- porque nuestras voces son poderosas y el voto es una de las maneras de hacerlas escuchar.
