Your Community Needs You: Filing Week is May 4–8
Leadership does not always look like someone with years of political experience or a perfect resume.
Sometimes it looks like a parent who wants better for their community. A renter who understands how hard it is to stay housed. A small business owner who sees what local policy means in real life. A young person with fresh ideas. A retiree with time, wisdom, and deep community roots. A neighbor who has been paying attention and decides, “Maybe I should step forward.”
Filing Week is May 4–8, and this is the moment when people officially file to run for local, state, and federal office in Washington. Online filing opens Monday, May 4 at 8 a.m. and closes Friday, May 8 at 5 p.m. Late filings are not accepted, so anyone considering a run should not wait until the last minute.
Local government shapes our daily lives in real, practical ways. This year, open races in Pacific County include Public Utility District Commissioner, countywide offices such as Auditor, Assessor, Treasurer, Commissioner, Sheriff, and both North and South District Court Judge seats. There are also races for the 19th Legislative District and the 3rd Congressional District.
These roles help decide how resources are used, whose concerns are heard, and what kind of future we are building together.
And too often, people talk themselves out of running before they even begin.
Maybe you think you are not qualified enough. Maybe you do not know where to start. Maybe you have never seen someone like you in office. Maybe you are worried about asking for help.
Why representation matters
Representation is not just a talking point. It shapes decisions.
Our communities are stronger when the people in leadership reflect the full range of lived experiences here in Pacific County, including people of color, working-class residents, young people, elders, and those who have historically been left out of decision-making spaces.
For too long, many voices have been underrepresented in local government. That has real consequences, from what issues get prioritized to how resources are distributed.
If you have ever felt overlooked, unheard, or like decisions are being made without your community at the table, your perspective is needed.
What is Filing Week?
Filing Week is the official window when candidates submit a Declaration of Candidacy to appear on the ballot.
In Pacific County, candidates can file online through VoteWA or in person at the Pacific County Auditor’s Office in South Bend. To file, you must be a registered voter in the district for the office you are seeking and pay any required filing fee.
The filing window is short and firm:
* Opens Monday, May 4 at 8 a.m.
* Closes Friday, May 8 at 5 p.m.
Why run?
Because local decisions matter.
Because the people closest to the issues often have the clearest understanding of what needs to change.
Because public service should not be limited to people who already know how the system works.
Because if you have ever said, “Someone should do something,” this might be your moment to ask whether that someone could be you.
Running for office is not just about winning a seat. It is also about raising issues, starting conversations, building relationships, and helping more people see themselves as part of civic life.

You still have a role.
Encourage someone you trust to consider running, especially someone whose voice is not often represented in local leadership. Share information. Pay attention to local races. Ask questions. Show up.
A healthy democracy does not begin on Election Day. It begins when people decide to participate.

La inscripción en línea abre el lunes 4 de mayo a las 8 a.m. y cierra el viernes 8 de mayo a las 5 p.m. No se aceptan inscripciones tardías, por lo que quienes estén considerando postularse no deben esperar hasta el último momento.
El gobierno local impacta nuestras vidas de maneras reales y prácticas. Este año, las contiendas abiertas en el condado de Pacific incluyen el cargo de comisionado del Distrito de Servicios Públicos (PUD), así como cargos del condado como Auditor, Tasador, Tesorero, Comisionado, Sheriff y los jueces de los tribunales de distrito del norte y del sur. Por qué la representación importa
La representación no es solo una idea. Tiene impacto real.
Nuestras comunidades son más fuertes cuando las personas en liderazgo reflejan la diversidad de experiencias que existen aquí en el condado de Pacific, incluyendo a personas de color, personas trabajadoras, jóvenes, adultos mayores y comunidades que históricamente han sido excluidas de la toma de decisiones.

¿Por qué postularse?
Porque las decisiones locales importan.

Postularse no solo se trata de ganar un puesto. También se trata de abrir conversaciones, visibilizar temas importantes y ayudar a que más personas se vean como parte de la vida cívica.
